South Mountain Community College... A Phoenix Tradition

Just as nearby South Mountain Park is a cherished Phoenix landmark, its namesake - South Mountain Community College (SMCC) – is also a Phoenix tradition.  SMCC is one of ten colleges in the Maricopa Community College District

On April 18, 1978, the district's governing board created the college to provide higher education opportunities for the communities in southern Maricopa County.  SMCC, which consisted of thirteen buildings built in 1980, began offering classes at their new college.

SMCC reflects the diversity of its surrounding communities reflecting a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of SMCC's students arrive from South Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe and Ahwatukee to attend school at the main campus, located at 24th Street and Baseline. In close proximity to the Ahwatukee Foothills Center and Guadalupe Center, SMCC offers an ideal location to take advantage of opportunities in degree and certificate programs, continuing education, and General Interest classes.
