Dedication to Student Learning
We exist only because students come to us in order to reach their personal and professional goals. Students expect, and deserve, quality academic offerings and academic and student services. South Mountain Community College provides educational opportunities for job readiness and mobility; for graduation and transfer; for active participation in local, national and global community; and for empowerment as a lifelong learner. Student learning outcomes are facilitated and measured. Feedback is used to make changes to the learning environment and support services.
Contribution to Community
We are visible, involved and cooperative community members. SMCC welcomes collaboration and provides outreach and programs for local area schools, businesses, industries, government agencies and civic and cultural groups. We solicit community input and establish advisory councils to develop responsive programs. To assist both our students and community, we emphasize workforce development programs and partnerships.

Commitment to Access and Diversity
We value the diversity of our student body. SMCC is designated both as a Hispanic Serving and a Minority Serving Institution. Over 60% of enrollment is minority. Although our service area is both geographically and demographically disparate, proportions of our enrollees reflect community composition. There are no entrance requirements. We offer a range of ESL, developmental and college level courses at flexible times to attract students with a variety of capabilities and needs. Financial aid, assessment, orientation, advising, counseling career development, tutoring, student government, fitness center, computer labs, library, athletics, music, theatre, and childcare maximize student success and increase retention.
Effective Use of Resources
We bring high quality educational opportunities to all constituencies within our service area at moderate cost. This past year, SMCC had enrollment growth unparalleled since its formative years. While enrollment growth reduces per capita costs, the challenge is to provide services for larger numbers of students with a static budget. The college developed strategies to raise external funds, to select off-sites locations and place services at these sites, to staff at lower cost, to maintain safety standards, to fill classrooms, and to effectively use technology throughout the college. Our goal is to optimize educational offerings and services that, primarily, at-risk students require while maximizing the use of fiscal, human and physical resources. Since retention is more cost effective than recruitment, we use strategies that increase continuous enrollment.
