On Friday, April 13, South Mountain Community College employees and students will once again help their neighbors by packing and selling discounted food boxes. Food is provided by the St. Mary’s/Westside Food Bank Alliance.
Distribution will be from noon to 2 pm, in the east parking lot of the Performing Arts Center of SMCC, 7050 S. 24th St., Phoenix, just north of Baseline Rd.
This will be the final sale of seven Food Value Club events throughout the 2006-07 school year.
The Food Value Club program is designed to provide low-cost, high-quality food. St. Mary’s Food Bank purchases the food at a reduced price and passes the savings along to consumers.
All are welcome to purchase the food. The program is not government subsidized and there is no paperwork. All purchases must be in cash.
As an example of what the program offers: $15 could purchase a FoodCARE box, which contains frozen meat items, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and rice.
A meat box, available for $10, contains an average of 8 to 11 pounds of high quality meat; vegetarian boxes include a variety of canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and rice.
With the purchase of any box, buyers will receive additional free food items such fresh fruits and vegetables.
