Students at Teacher Prep Charter High School in Phoenix are flipping and flopping over the opportunity to become teachers for a day.  Meanwhile, their teachers are flopping and flipping over the chance to become students for the day.

On Wednesday, April 25, students will exchange roles with their teachers during the school’s first Teacher-Student Flip-Flop Day.  Classes will start at 8:30 am and concluded at 3:15 pm.  The charter high school is located in the downtown center of Phoenix College, 640 N.  First Ave.

“What better way is there for high school students who are preparing to become teachers to get their feet wet in the profession?” asks Principal David Singer.

Chartered by the Maricopa Community College District and directly supported by Phoenix College and South Mountain Community College, Teacher Prep High School’s goal is to prepare high school students for entry into college-level teacher education programs.  And, with the current and future shortage of K-12 teachers, Teacher Prep hopes to be a strong force in the efforts to fill the void.

Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their classroom teaching, management and leadership skills.  Each student will serve as a classroom teacher andwill be responsible for many of the same functions as the regular teacher --including taking attendance, preparing and presenting the lesson and managing the classroom.  While students are teachers during the day, the staff will play the role of students.

Fourteen to eighteen students will become teachers for the day, one student will be principal, and eight teachers will become the students.
