Jazz Festival 2007 Set for Feb. 9 & 10 at South Mountain Community College
Jazz Notables Mike Crotty and Deater O’Neill to be Featured
Jazz notables Mike Crotty and Deater O’Neill will be featured artists at the South Mountain Community College Jazz Festival 2007 on Feb. 9 and 10.
Concerts, clinics and workshops will highlight the annual festival at the college, 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Road.
Dwight Killian, bassist; Henry Rose, pianist; and Earl Halliburton, drummer, will also perform and teach at the event.
A jazz concert, open to all, is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 pm in Performance Hall of SMCC. Admission: $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for students. For ticket information, call the SMCC Performing Arts Hotline: 602.243.8353.
Meanwhile, jazz enthusiasts are invited to attend clinics on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 10 am to 4:30 pm. Serving as guest clinicians will be Crotty (sax, trumpet and flute); O’Neill (vocalist); and Halliburton and Rose (percussion and keyboard). This event is free of charge. Questions about the clinics? Also on Saturday, a free concert is set for 7 pm in Performance Hall. Enjoy the music of the SMCC Jazz Ensemble featuring Guest Artist Mike Crotty. Also performing: the SMCC Vocal Jazz Choir, director by Henry Rose.
Multi-instrumentalist Mike Crotty is a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He has written music for the most famous names in jazz, including Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Lewis and Clark Terry. Crotty has performed with Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Diana Ross and many others. For 26 years, he was the composer and arranger for the legendary US Air Force Airmen of Note. Currently, he is a senior lecturer in jazz composition and brass
at ASU.
Deater O’Neill is a familiar face and voice among Arizona jazz audiences. Since 1995, Arizona symphony orchestras have featured her swinging jazz vocals in numerous pops concerts. In 1999, she was a featured jazz artist during ASU’s annual jazz week, presenting clinics and concerts.
The Smithsonian Institution has presented O’Neill in a solo concert celebrating the great female vocalists of the swing era of the 1930’s and 40’s. In addition to performing, she teaches voice privately and works as a vocal clinician for universities throughout the country.
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts appointed O’Neill and Crotty as artists-in-residence, presenting them in five concerts in March, 1999.
