If you are a native Spanish speaker and bilingual in English and Spanish, consider a career in the emerging field of translation and interpretation services.
This spring, South Mountain Community College will offer a four-credit class, “Survey of Translation and Interpretation,” with Consuelo V. Astete. The first class will be Jan. 16.
Astete, also a Spanish teacher, has more than 20 years experience as a professional interpreter and translator in the judicial and medical fields. She is a specialist in cross-cultural communication, language and culture.
“I look forward to passing on my experience. This field is growing and there are many opportunities for jobs and careers,” noted Astete, who has done translation and interpretation work in immigration, the court system, attorney-client interviews, doctor-patient exams, and in administrative settings.
The course will cover the historical and social beginnings of the profession, recent legislation and language policies, cognitive processes involved, and theory and research. Also included: practice of Spanish grammar; learning court, medical and business-related terminology; and understanding the ethical and professional roles of translators and interpreters. Simulated activities and written-translation assignments will be included.
Classes will be offered during the Spring 2007 semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2:40 pm and 6 to 7:40 pm at SMCC, 7050 S. 24th St.
Cost for the class (TRS 100) is $260, plus a $15 registration fee.
Formal training in Spanish is helpful, but not required. Students will be tested for language abilities in order to provide proper placement.
