Turn gourds into art; three-part class starts in February
Go out of your gourd with a three-part art class featuring the adaptable curcurbit. (In case you didn’t know, that’s how gourd-lovers refer to their favorite fruit). The class is presented by South Mountain Community College in Laveen.
Gourd artist Shelley Fletcher will conduct the class --“All About Gourds” -- Feb. 28, March 7, and March 10. She will teach the class at her art studio, 5039 W. Olney. Fletcher is a 15-year gourd artist and member of the new Laveen Art League.
The artist will teach the history and uses of gourds, and how to clean and cut them. Also, she will teach how to wood-burn designs, apply beads, weave, use color mediums, and more. Students will create their own original artistic designs.
The first class is on Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 pm; the second class will be Wednesday, March 7 from 6 to 8 pm. On Saturday, March 10, students will design their gourd work at the studio from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
Cost is $35 plus $10 for supplies. There is a $15 one-time per-semester registration fee.
Students may register for the class (NC 500 9022) online at www.southmountaincc.edu or by calling 480.659.3070.
