On Feb. 1 (Fri.) , South Mountain Community College employees and students will help their neighbors by packing and selling low-cost boxes of food as volunteers for the St. Mary’s/Westside Food Bank Alliance.

The college continues this long-standing volunteer work with subsequent dates of March 7 and April 4.

Distribution on all dates will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the east parking lot of the Performing Arts Center at SMCC, 7050 S. 24th St., Phoenix, just north of Baseline Rd.

“Community members have expressed great appreciation for the food sales and we want to continue to be of service,” said Buddy Cheeks, Student Life Director at SMCC.

The Food Value Club program is designed to provide low-cost, high-quality food.  Cheeks stressed that it is not a government program, a handout or a charity, and that anyone is welcome to purchase the food.   There is no paperwork and all purchases must be in cash.

St. Mary’s Food Bank purchases the food at a reduced price and passes the savings along to consumers.

Cost is $13 for a pantry box of 12 to 16 assorted dry food items, $16 for a meat-pack box of four assorted meat items, and $20 for a griller’s box of five assorted meat items. Boxes may be heavy, and guests are advised to bring a cart.
