Annual Series Includes Stories of Ghosts, Fools and Saving the Earth

WHAT:

The South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute will present its popular annual “Folktales for Grownups” series beginning February 3, featuring three ensemble performances that spotlight time-honored folktales from cultures around the world.

The first performance will feature tales of “Ghosts, Revenants and Spirits.” Presenting these scary stories will be storytellers Sean Buvala, Paulette Friday, Jordan Hill, Marilyn Omifunke Torres,  and Liz Warren.

Upcoming sessions include “Noodleheads, Fools and Tricksters” (March 3) and “Earthcare” (April 21).

The SMCC Storytelling Institute is one of only a handful of academic programs in the nation to focus on this ancient art form, and is the only Arizona institution to offer an Academic Certificate in Storytelling.  SMCC storytelling programs are not exclusively children’s events, but often contain sophisticated themes and content, and are suitable for both adults and young people.

WHEN:

“Ghosts, Revenants and Spirits” will be presented on Wednesday, February 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. In courtesy to the storytellers, no one will be seated once the storytelling has begun.

WHERE:

The concert will take place in the SMCC Studio Theatre, located at 7050 S. 24th Street in Phoenix, just north of Baseline Road.

ADMISSION:

Admission is FREE.
