Join in the festivities on July 26 (Thursday) as the South Mountain Community College Guadalupe Extended Campus breaks ground for its upcoming expansion and remodeling.
The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at the SMCC Guadalupe Center, at 9233 S. Avenida del Yaqui (Priest Drive), just south of Guadalupe Road.
Dancers will perform and refreshments will be served. Speakers include Guadalupe Mayor Bernadette Jimenez and South Mountain Community College President Dr. Ken Atwater.
Construction is expected to begin Aug. 6, with completion anticipated for June 2008. The Fall 2008 semester will see the first classes offered at the newly remodeled site. (The SMCC Guadalupe Center will continue to offer a full schedule of classes during the remodeling).
The current 5,000-square-foot center will be remodeled and the overall size will double to approximately 10,000 square feet. Designer is Fucello Architects.
The college plans a grand opening for Fall 2008, when it enters its 20th year of service to the community.
Established in 1989, the center serves the higher education needs of the Town of Guadalupe and surrounding neighborhoods. In 2000, a new and permanent home for the Guadalupe Center was constructed as part of the Town of Guadalupe Multi-Purpose Center.
“With such a significant addition of new space and remodeling of our existing classrooms, we will have what is essentially a whole new campus,” according to Guadalupe Director Raúl S. Monreal, Jr.
The college has worked closely to establish a productive partnership with the Town of Guadalupe, “where three cultures flourish”: the Pascua Yaqui tribe, the area’s Mexican-American community, and the East Valley’s Anglo population.
