July 27, 2007--South Mountain Community College Announces Upward Bound Program for High School Students SMCC Receives $1 Million Grant to Prepare Students for College

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) has received a grant of nearly a million dollars ($1,000,000) to fund a four-year program to help prepare area high school students to continue into higher education.
 
Upward Bound is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program. It was created primarily to provide fundamental support to low-income high school students, and students whose parents have not complete a bachelor’s degree as they prepare to enter college.
 
Total award for the four-year grant is $999,992. SMCC’s Upward Bound program will be limited to students at two Phoenix high schools: South Mountain High School and Central High School.
 
 
The program will provide a variety of resources for students, including:

  • Academic instruction in a variety of subject areas
  • Tutoring, counseling and mentoring
  • Cultural enrichment and work-study programs

Participating students will also spend one week on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
 
Qualifying students must be currently enrolled as a freshmen or sophomores, with a minimum grade-point average of 2.5.
