The SMCC Storytelling Institute is partnering with the Arizona Aloha Festival (Downtown Phoenix, March 17- 18) to bring "Tita" Kathy Collins from Hawaii and Emil Wolfgramm from Tonga.

Collins and Wolfgramm are acclaimed for their storytelling about Polynesia.

On March 21 (Wed.), from 6 to 8 pm, Wolfgramm will lead the workshop, “Traditional Polynesian Storytelling.”  He is considered a master of the Tupaheo style of traditional Tongan storytelling and is a leading authority on poetic visions of the demi-god Maui  and the clan of Tangaloa gods.   Cost for this workshop is $50, and $25 for students. The event will be in the Performing Arts Center of the college, 7050 S. 24th St. (just north of Baseline Rd.)

On March 22 (Thur.),  the Storytelling Institute will host a FREE Community Storytelling Festival in the Student Union. First session will run from 9:30  to 10:45 am; second session will be from 11 am to 12:15 pm.    Collins and Wolfgramm will begin by telling a story; then, current and former storytelling students and faculty will tell stories.

Also on March 22, from 2 to 4 pm, Collins will lead the workshop, “Developing a Storytelling Persona” in the Student Union.  Cost is $50 and $25 for students.

Collins was raised on Maui,  and uses her alter ego, “Tita,” to share Hawaiian legends and spread the word of “pidgin” (Hawaiian Creole English) pride.

On March 23 (Fri), from 7 to 9 pm, Collins and Wolfgramm will perform “Tales of Polynesia from Tonga to Hawaii.”  The storytelling concert will be in the SMCC Performance Hall. Cost is $7; TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT SHOWUP.COM.

In addition, Wolfgramm will teach a one-credit, special-projects class, “Tongan and Polynesian Myths”  (STO 298AA, Section 3440).   The class will be offered beginning Saturday, March 24 (1 to 4 pm), March 28 (6 to 9 pm), March 31 (1 to 4 pm), April 4 (6 to 9 pm) and April 7 (1 to 4 pm).  They will be offered in PAC Classroom 740.  Cost is $65, plus a one-time per-semester registration fee of $15.
