May 11, 2007--South Mountain Community College to Award 215 Degrees; 148 Students to Walk in Commencement on May 11

A total of 215 students will earn degrees from SMCC this May -- receiving  258 degrees and 31 certificates.  (Some students earn more than one degree, certificate or combination of both).

Of the students, 148  will march in the commencement ceremony on Friday, May 11.  The ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m.

 “Charting Futures, Connecting Worlds” is the theme of the 27th annual commencement.  The ceremony will be outdoors in the Performing Arts Amphitheatre of SMCC, 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Rd.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon will give the keynote address.  Dr. Rufus Glasper, Chancellor of the 10-college Maricopa Community College District, will introduce the mayor.

The 258 degrees include: 196 Associates of Arts Degrees, 25 Associates in Science, 19  Associates in Applied Science, 10 Associates in Business and 8 Associates in Elementary Education Degrees. 

The 31 certificates will be awarded in the areas of Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Education,  Basic Behavioral Health Sciences, Advanced Behavioral Health Sciences, and Academic Certificates in Storytelling; also, Information Security Technology, Telecommunications Technology, Networking Technology: Cisco Technology, and Cisco Network Administration.

In all, 68 of students will graduate with distinction.
