Award-Winning Program Helps Incoming Students Prepare for College Math Placement Tests
Registration is now underway for South Mountain Community College's award-winning Math STAR Camp, designed to help incoming students prepare for college math-placement tests.
The Summer 2008 camp will be offered August 4-14, from 5 to 8 p.m. Registration fee is $20 for this non-credit class (ask for the math-review workshop class, number 13452)
Students who have taken algebra in high school may wish to retake the placement test that has placed them in Arithmetic Review, Beginning Algebra or Intermediate Algebra. The camp is designed to help students to qualify for higher-level math and bypass pre-college or entry-level math.
Sessions take place at the SMCC Main Campus, 7050 S. 24th St., in Phoenix.

About Math STAR Camp
Math STAR Camp---created and developed by SMCC faculty members Helen Smith, Brian Karasek, Teresa Leyba Ruiz, Ann Lindner, and Ranjita Saha---was named SMCC's
"Innovation of the Year" for 2006/2007.
The program was developed in response to large numbers of incoming students with three or more years of high school math testing into developmental math courses. SMCC faculty believed that with a short period of intensive review and preparation, students could avoid a full semester of developmental coursework.
Of the 60+ students who have completed the program since its inception in 2004, 80 percent were able to test into intermediate algebra or higher level college courses. The camp requires 24 hours of content review (eight days for three hours per day) from beginning and intermediate algebra, test-taking skills, the placement test, and academic advising.
