Elementary, middle-school and high school athletes will get the chance to train with Arizona’s best community college basketball team and the nation’s smartest community college volleyball team this summer.
South Mountain Community College coaches and players will host two basketball camps and one volleyball camp this summer. The three and four-day camps will focus on fundamental techniques key to each sport, including game scrimmages.
The first basketball camp takes place June 16-19, and will be led by Head Women’s Coach Cassie Sawyer. The camp is open to boys and girls. Grades 3-8 will meet mornings between 8 and 11 a.m., and Grades 9-12 will meet afternoons, from 12 to 4 p.m. Fee is $70 for Grades 3-8 and $80 for Grades 9-12.
The second basketball camp takes place July 14-16. It will be led by Dan Nichols, Head Coach of the SMCC Men’s Basketball Team, Arizona’s top team and 7th place finishers in the 2008 national tournament. This camp is open to boys and girls in Grades 5-12. Grades 5-8 will meet mornings between 9 and 11:30 a.m., and Grades 9-12 will meet afternoons, from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Fee is $80 per participant.
Finally, the SMCC Women’s Volleyball Team, named the 2008 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year, will host a four-day camp for girls only on July 28-31. The camp is open to girls Grades 5-12. Grades 5-8 will meet mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Grades 9-12 will meet afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. Fee is $80 for Grades 5-8, and $85 for Grades 9-12.
Registration for all three camps is now underway. All camps will take place in the SMCC Gym, 7050 S. 24th Street in Phoenix (just north of Baseline Road.)
