South Mountain Community College will continue its sales of low-cost food for the community on Friday, Dec. 7.

For the fourth year, SMCC employees and students are helping their neighbors by packing and selling boxes of food priced from $13 to $20 as volunteers for the St. Mary’s/ Westside Food Bank Alliance.

The Food Value Club sale and distribution will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the east parking lot of the SMCC Performing Arts Center at SMCC, 7050 S. 24th St., Phoenix, just north of Baseline Rd.

Subsequent dates throughout the year will be:  Feb. 1, March 7, and April 4.

“Community members have expressed great appreciation for the food sales and we want to continue to be of service,” said Buddy Cheeks, Student Life Director at SMCC. “Our college employees and students enjoy volunteering in this program and want to continue as well.”

The Food Value Club program is designed to provide low-cost, high-quality food.  Cheeks stressed that it is not a government program, a handout or a charity, and that anyone is welcome to purchase the food. St. Mary’s Food Bank purchases the food at a reduced price and passes the savings along to consumers.

No paperwork is required.   All purchases must be in cash.

For $13, the program offers a pantry box containing 12 to 14 dry items; and two boxes of frozen meat items are available for $16 and $20. With each box purchased, customers receive a “bonus box” which may contain assorted juices, fresh fruits and vegetables, and/or bread. Boxes may be heavy, and guests are advised to bring a cart.
