Don’t be surprised if a leprechaun or ancient Celt whispers in your ear that you should explore and celebrate Irish storytelling with a special class at South Mountain Community College.
You won’t be imagining things. Instead, you’ll be experiencing some of the magic inherent in Irish myths, legends, folktales and humorous tales.
Liz Warren, of the SMCC Storytelling Institute, will teach “The Irish Storytelling Tradition” during Spring semester. Warren has spent the last three summers teaching storytelling in Ireland. “Being in Ireland has allowed me to collect new stories and also to deepen my understanding of their connection to the landscape,” she says.
The three-credit class begins Jan. 15 at the college, 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Rd. Classes will be Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Cost is $195, plus a one-time-per-semester $15 registration fee.
The course will include: the history and practice of storytelling in Ireland; great storytellers and story collectors of the past and present; modern masters of Irish storytelling; and how to research, develop and craft Irish stories for telling. In addition, Liz Weir, one of Ireland’s best-known storytellers, will tell and talk to class members on March 25. Weir is the featured guest of the 2008 Spring Storytelling Festival at SMCC March 26 - 28.
The class is expected to fill quickly, so register now (STO-290, Section 6617).
