JOIN THE 22nd ANNUAL MESSIAH CHOIR AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN CC
Popular Annual Performance of Highlights from Handel’s Messiah Set for Dec. 5
For the 22nd year, the South Mountain Community College Music Department is inviting singers from the community to be part of the SMCC holiday tradition of performing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah.
Each year, the choir attracts 65 to 75 to voices, accompanied by a professional orchestra. Dr. Jerome K. Garrison Sr., SMCC Fine Arts Faculty Chair, directs the concert. In the past, choir members have included area high school students, college students, church choir members, and other amateur and professional singers.
Choir members who have performed Messiah must attend at least three rehearsals. First-time performers must audition and are required to attend all rehearsals.
Auditions will be held Oct. 21 and Oct. 28, both at 5:30 p.m. in the SMCC Music Building, Room 530 or by appointment. To schedule an audition, contact Desiree Armijo at 602.243.8382 or Dr. Jerome Garrison at 602.243.8055.
The 22nd Annual Holiday Concert will be Sat., Dec. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the SMCC Performance Hall, 7050 S. 24th Street in Phoenix.
Times and dates of the choir rehearsals are Wednesdays: Nov. 4, 11, 18, and 26, plus Dec. 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.;
and Saturdays: Nov. 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The dress rehearsal will be Saturday, Dec. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Dr. Garrison, an Ahwatukee resident and award-winning music faculty at South Mountain Community College, began the Messiah performances because he wanted to tap into community talent for a special performance. The annual event is a favorite among music-lovers throughout Arizona.
